This is the Best Airport in the World, According to the New Ranking

Hamad International Airport (HIA) in Qatar was named the world’s best airport in the 2024 Skytrax awards, placing second, ahead of 12-time winner Singapore Changi Airport

World’s Best Airport

The annual rankings are based on customer satisfaction surveys at more than 500 airports; Factors such as cleanliness, friendliness of airport staff, ease of transportation to and from the airport, terminal design, food options and more are evaluated.

Hamad International Airport first opened in 2014 and   replaced the adjacent Doha International Airport as Qatar’s main aviation hub. The airport is operated by Qatar Airways, which is consistently ranked as one of the best international airlines in the Condé Nast Traveler  Reader ‘s Choice Awards and is the only airport designed specifically for Airbus A380 aircraft. This year marks the third time the airport has won the prestigious industry award.

So what exactly distinguishes the airport from its competitors? One of its newest and most ambitious features is the “Orchard,” a 6,000-square-foot indoor tropical garden with 65 retail and dining venues opening in 2022 as part of a multi-year expansion project. Home to more than 300 trees and 25,000 plants sourced from sustainable forests around the world, it is one of the airport’s many green initiatives, which includes a waste management program that recycles 3,979 tonnes of organic compost annually for use as fertiliser.

“Throughout our young history, we have continued to demonstrate our commitment to environmental sustainability, from increasing carbon efficiency to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and managing wastewater,” Michael McMillan, the airport’s vice president of facilities management, said in a 2022 news release. “Since our founding, we have proudly been at the forefront of what we do.”

In the last few years, the airport has added a brand new airport hotel, the Oryx Garden Hotel , as well as four new airport lounges, including the glamorous Louis Vuitton Lounge . Qatar Duty Free, the airport’s huge retail center, has a “street” called Viale del Lusso, which is devoted to luxury stores such as Dolce&Gabbana, Jimmy Choo and Valentino, as well as Louis Vuitton. So perhaps it’s no surprise that the airport won Skytrax’s award for the world’s best airport shopping in 2024.

The airport surpassed the previous record set at the FIFA World Cup by serving more than 45 million passengers in 2023, an increase of 31% compared to the previous year. HIA has also acquired new international airline partners such as Vistara, Iberia, Xiamen Airlines, Garuda Indonesia and Japan Airlines and serves more than 250 destinations. The airport’s rapid growth is now showing signs of stopping: the second phase of the expansion, scheduled to begin in 2023, aims to increase the airport’s capacity to more than 70 million passengers annually.

Qatar Airways Group CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer said in a press release: “Our continued investment in our facilities and pioneering initiatives in retail and hospitality in one large terminal have made this success possible.” A wide range of experiences at the airport, including ‘Souq Al Matar’, which brings Qatari hospitality and culture closer to travellers; ‘Orchard’, an ideal place to relax and rejuvenate between flights; and a number of high-end lounges.”

Other standout winners of the 2024 Skytrax airport awards include Seoul’s Incheon Airport, the world’s most family-friendly airport; Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, the cleanest airport in the world; and Istanbul Airport for the world’s best airport dining experience.
